Tenali Widows Project

In addition to helping children, Sanctuary Home supports ten widows. Widows in rural India are social outcasts, seen as worthless once their husbands die. They can not remarry or hold jobs. If they are young widows with children to feed, their plight is multiplied. Many are without hope, simply waiting to die, beggars with no future. Even those who profess Christianity receive little or no help; the condition of widows in India is not due to religious reasons, but societal traditions. Unlike our children's program, the widows we support are simply given money for food every six months. The cost to sponsor a widow is $10 per month. Widows in the program are the poorest of the poor, those most in need, selected by our staff in India. There is no correspondence with these women, although we do receive occasional photos, which we post here. This is simply a way to help widows in their distress by providing money for them to buy food.
